Stage 16 : Hornillos to Castrojeriz

Woke up lazily but then Quinn decided to have a run in with his hiking stick.  Somehow the pointy end was pointed up he rolled over and wam right in the eye.  Luckily his eye was closed so he just got a big scratch and a swollen eye lid.  Not sure how the stick ended up in that position.

So after all that excitement we had breakfast and headed out about 7:30am. I really liked this town.  So off we go thru the wheat fields.

As we get up on the Mesa it's flat but they had these rock fences.  Nice dividers, but some of the rocks are huge.

As we entered one town they had this little Ermita.  Church type thing, dedicated to the saint of Sweden, I think.  It doesn't look like much but when you go in it has this little statue and and cool painted ceiling.

Finally we head off the Mesa into a little valley we walk thru.

This guy was mowing the grass.  He had one mower in the front and a side one off to the right.

Around a corner in the valley was an old convent.  Only parts remaining are some arches and walls.  Must have been pretty awesome and large when it was all there.

Next an impressive church as we approach our destination.  This place has a ton of churches and other historic sites.  It was a fortified town and there are some serious walls. We made good time today, about 20km in 5hrs including a few stops.  As we got to town the nice breeze was gone and it was getting hot, so perfect timing.

We met this couple on our way into town.  He works for the postal service and has been with them for 20 years.  They let him take a leave to do the walk.  His wife is in a mechanical wheel chair with a wagon with a ramp pulled behind.  Some areas that are over paths they have to skip but they seemed to be doing well.  Very inspiring.  They have two sons that are a few days ahead.  They are working it out as they go.

At the top of Castrojeriz there are the ruins of a castle.

The roads around this town are like the roman roads.  A bunch of rocks that people seem to think make good road.  All I can say is I'm glad I'm not wearing heals.  That would be impossible.

Now we are eating in this great back room in a local bar.  The atmosphere is very old barn like.

Finally, how bout this Mercedes or is it from the Flinstones.  Always something neat to see.

I loved the photo of Quinn flying down the road! Glad his eye is ok. Yay, Quinn. Amazed that the wife of the postal service dude could manage in a motorized wheelchair thingy. I love seeing the small tributary to the Swedish saint. It is really neat seeing all the churches and ruins. I keep wondering how the ruins end up that way. People get fed up with specific people or sects? Were there fires, or wars? Did people just leave or die (plague?) Did later folks start reclaiming the materials for other buildings or else how did the convent and castle end up practically leveled in places? Time, wind and water only do so much damage. But nevermind. It is really fun looking forward to these posts.
